For the cards the bettor would like to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons need to be pressed so that they light up. The player can choose to keep any amount of cards they wish, from all to none.

After the player has selected which cards she would like to keep, they should press ‘deal’, at which point any new cards are handed out if desired. The hand is now completed, with the Video Poker machine scanning the cards to see if it matches any of the winning hands shown on the payment schedule.

Generally, the minimum winning hand on an Electronic Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money getting larger for each better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, and moves on to two pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kinds, straight flushes and finally royal flushes. It goes without saying that the payout schedule can change from game to game, so that knowledgeable players are able to select the most money-making ones every instance.

As soon as the initial round has completed, the player can either decide to remain on in an attempt to maximize their earnings, or they can press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any credits that they may have won. Further, a few versions of the game give the player a chance to double their winnings, in which instance a further game is played. There are also differences between individual machines, with some decks of cards having wild cards and other varying elements to enhance playability.
